The Pros: Using Linux for Small Business (Part 1)

by ContractRight.com | Follow on X here

This article highlights seven powerful reasons to use Linux for small businesses.

1) Free and Powerful:  First, what is Linux? Linux is an open-source Unix-like operating system based on the Linux kernel. It is the brain of the computer. Get free access to tremendously powerful software; for free, what a deal. There are software alternatives for just about any program on the market, plus find new unique, innovative solutions only offered by Linux.

2) Community: The software is continually improved by a passionate community of developers that believe in making software available for everyone in the community. Everyone can contribute and can control what is on their computer.

4) Security: This community makes the software more secure by having a global team of developers and users constantly improving and solving issues. One company has limited bandwidth, but a community that spans the globe is a powerful tool for finding bugs.

5) Customization: Linux allows the software to be configured and customized to a company’s needs, which would be out of range for most small businesses. However, if the business is technology focused, it might be a viable option for a faster start to use what has already been developed; instead of creating everything new from scratch. Before implementing an open-source solution, check out the software license policy, which can vary.

6) Be Green: Linux offers a very efficient operating system that can use older computers. To get more use out of old electronics, Linux is the best choice for being green. For example, Puppy Linux can run on just ram.

7) A Low-Cost Solution:  Linux can provide a solution for those who do not have access to the newest equipment or a big budget for hardware. Linux can do miracles on older hardware. In a business, this could be a powerful way to cut costs.

Stay tuned for the cons and how to solve them with solutions covered in part two of this article. Do you have professional technology skills that can help small businesses? Please list your professional skills here.
